The Impact of Grief on Mental Health
Grief is a natural response to loss. It is one that is also filled with a range of emotions – including sadness, guilt, anger, and even relief. These feelings can be overwhelming and may interfere with daily functioning and overall quality of life. Sometimes grief gets stuck and feels too overwhelming and the individual may need grief therapy, and extra support to regain that sense of self and balance.
Causes of Grief
In my work as a grief therapy specialist, I have found that grief isn’t caused by the loss of a loved one alone. There are many potential causes of grief, including:
- Divorce Adjustment – After a divorce, the adjustment to regaining your sense of self, determining how to move forward, and coming to terms with the end of the marriage can be significant. Many people struggle with grief and loss during this time. I work with individuals to manage these emotions.
- Loss of Community – Those that have lost a community in some form, either because they moved, because they left a toxic situation, because they changed religions, or because of a falling out can all experience a loss of community that can deeply affect them.
- Loss of Connection – Any loss of connection can be mourned, with significant and often complicated emotions. Human beings crave connection – friendships, work relationships, identity – and losing those connections can be devastating.
While we associate grief and loss with losing a loved one, it can come in many different forms, from losing a job to losing a home to losing a hobby. There is no wrong time to reach out for support overcoming this type of loss.
Therapeutic Approaches for Grief and Loss
In addition to other mental health services, I specialize in grief therapy in Arizona. I employ several evidence-based therapeutic methods to help individuals process their grief and move toward healing. Some of the therapies I offer include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – This approach helps individuals understand and change negative thought patterns related to their loss.
- Narrative Therapy – This method involves exploring and reshaping the personal stories individuals tell about their loss, fostering a healthier perspective.
- Grief Counseling – This type of therapy helps individuals work through the various stages and range of emotions they may feel after a loss.
- Mindfulness Practices – Mindfulness practices cultivate present moment-awareness, allowing clients to honor difficult emotions with compassion.
There are many approaches to addressing these difficult feelings, and my role is to work with you to help you cope with the loss and learn how to move forward.
About My Practice
I am a licensed therapist, based in Phoenix, that has made the switch to providing remote therapy throughout the state of Arizona. One reason that made this switch is because it was clear to me that patients were better served when they didn’t have to commute, when they weren’t limited by location or distance, and when they could feel comfortable receiving treatment in their home.
I create an environment where you can be free to be yourself. I understand the importance of culture in a person’s understanding of the world, and I am here to help you in a way that accepts you for who you are and what you need.
