What Makes Remote Therapy More Comfortable for Clients?

Remote therapy/Telehealth has been around for a long time. But in 2020, as a result of COVID-19, it really took off. Not only did more therapists switch to full time remote therapy, but more clients also decided that they preferred to go remote, as there are advantages that in-person therapy does not offer.

I recently decided that it was time to go “full remote.” I closed up my office and now see clients via Telehealth entirely. Nearly all of my clients preferred remote therapy, and it opened the door for me to focus on my specialties.

Still, there are times when someone contacts us and asks if we provide in-person therapy. They may even say they prefer in-person. But often, it’s because most people picture this idea that one needs to be in an office in order to benefit from therapy. That is not the case.

In fact, the accessibility and convenience of remote therapy has made it an increasingly popular choice for individuals seeking mental health support. Unlike traditional in-person sessions, remote therapy – conducted through video calls, phone sessions, or text-based communication—offers a level of comfort that can make therapy more approachable and effective for many people.

Why Consider Remote Therapy?

Remote therapy, also known as “online therapy” or “video therapy,” offers many benefits for individuals that are looking for mental health support. These include:

  • Eliminates Barriers to Access

One of the most significant advantages of remote therapy is its ability to remove logistical obstacles. Individuals living in rural or underserved areas often struggle to find mental health professionals nearby. Remote therapy allows them to connect with qualified therapists without the need for extensive travel. In addition, those with mobility limitations, chronic illnesses, or disabilities may find virtual therapy more accommodating than commuting to an office.

  • Offers a Familiar and Safe Environment

For many, the idea of sitting in a therapist’s office can feel intimidating or impersonal. Remote therapy allows clients to engage in sessions from the comfort of their own home, where they may feel more relaxed and secure. Being in a familiar setting can also reduce anxiety, making it easier to open up about personal thoughts and emotions. In some cases, it may also help me get a bit more of a glimpse into your life, because you can – if needed – show me things that are important to you and your experience, rather than try to relay it in an office.

  • Reduces Time and Scheduling Conflicts

Busy schedules often make it difficult for individuals to prioritize mental health care. Commuting to and from a therapist’s office requires additional time that not everyone has. Remote therapy eliminates the need for travel, allowing clients to fit sessions more seamlessly into their daily routines. This can be particularly beneficial for parents, professionals, and students juggling multiple responsibilities.

  • Provides Greater Therapist Options

Traditional in-person therapy often limits individuals to therapists within a certain geographic radius. With remote therapy, clients can access a broader range of professionals, making it easier to find a therapist who specializes in their specific concerns. This expanded selection ensures that clients receive the most effective care suited to their needs, rather than settling for what is available locally.

  • Supports Privacy and Confidentiality

For some individuals, attending therapy in a public or clinical setting may feel uncomfortable due to concerns about privacy. Remote therapy allows sessions to be conducted in a private space, reducing the likelihood of running into acquaintances or feeling self-conscious in a waiting room. We use only the most secure TeleHealth platforms to ensure that data is protected as well.

  • Reduces Social Anxiety and Pressure

Traditional face-to-face therapy can feel overwhelming for individuals who struggle with social anxiety. Remote therapy removes the pressure of in-person interactions, allowing clients to engage in sessions in a way that feels less intimidating. This can make it easier for individuals to communicate openly and build a therapeutic relationship at their own pace.

  • Encourages Consistency and Commitment

Life events, travel, and unexpected schedule changes can disrupt in-person therapy attendance. Remote therapy offers greater flexibility, making it easier for clients to maintain consistent sessions. This continuity can lead to more effective therapeutic progress, as clients are less likely to miss appointments due to logistical challenges.

Is Remote Therapy Right for You?

The most important part of therapy is the commitment to it. If you’re feeling like you only want in-person, then remote therapy may not be the right choice for you.

But there’s no denying that remote therapy has transformed the way mental health support is accessed, making it a more comfortable and practical option for many individuals.

By eliminating geographical barriers, reducing logistical challenges, and providing a familiar setting, remote therapy offers a level of accessibility and ease that can enhance the overall therapeutic experience. While it may not be suitable for everyone, for many, it represents a valuable and effective alternative to traditional in-person sessions.
